A Guide to the Different Available Drug Detox Programs

When you begin to consider entering a treatment program, its essential to pick a program that will work for you and all of your needs. In this guide, we will discuss the many types of drug detox programs that are available.

The detox program you enter must be one that you feel you can thrive in. If the program doesn’t mesh well with your personality and the type of treatment that you need, it can prove detrimental to the recovery process in the long run.

Long-term Drug Detox Programs

In some cases, attending a long term treatment program is the best option.

These types of programs may be categorized by their long-term inpatient routine that sees addicts through the beginning of recovery until they reach their “graduation” from the program.

These programs allows patients to remain until they’ve reached a point where they feel that they are ready to reenter the outside world. Typically a long-term program can last anywhere from 6-12 months depending on the needs of the recovering addict.

The benefit of choosing a more prolonged treatment program is that you can ensure that you’ve been equipped with all of the tools necessary to deal with extreme situations while remaining sober. This form of treatment is the most beneficial for addicts that have had a history of relapses in the past.

Outpatient Programs

The benefit of enrolling in an outpatient treatment program is that you’re able to stay within the comfort of your own home while attending treatment. There are varying ways that outpatient programs tackle addition.

The first is providing a rigid schedule for people to follow that includes daily group sessions that they must attend. Other outpatient programs allow the person in recovery to participate in the meetings at the facility only if they’ve scheduled an appointment.

This may be the more viable option if you find that you don’t have the finances available to check into an inpatient facility. It’s also beneficial if you’ve got other responsibilities that you need to take care of regularly like going to work or watching your children.

Short Term Treatment

Short term treatment is when an addict is in therapy from 3-30 days. Many short term programs are offered as outpatient or inpatient programs; the choice that you make is a personal choice and is based on the severity of the addiction.

During short term treatment programs, the recovering addict may find that the facility requires them to check-in and participate in many therapy sessions set up throughout the day. Because you’re spending such a short time in the facility, everything you do is hyper-focused on your recovery.

This is achieved by ensuring that each patient has a schedule that includes time to get to the bottom of their issues and ways to ensure that they can cope without turning back to their chosen substance use. Outpatient programs are also not as intensive as an inpatient program may be.

Inpatient Programs

Inpatient treatment programs are when the person seeking to enter recovery thoroughly checks themselves into a facility for an extended period.

Before entering the recovery facility, it’s typical that you’ll have to be admitted into a medical clinic to ensure that you make it through detox safely and without incident.

Before you decide to drop everything and enter an inpatient program, some things need to be done first. If you’ve got children in your care, you’ll need to arrange for them to stay with members of your family until you’ve completed treatment.
The next thing that you’ll need to do is have a conversation with your current employer.

This conversation should be honest and let them know you’ll need some time to go and work on yourself. In some cases, your employer may approve the time off without penalizing you.

Also, it’s recommended that you check with the facility about the items that you need to bring with you when you arrive for treatment. Of course, upon arrival, your belongings will be searched to ensure that you’ve not brought any contraband.

Court-Required Treatment

If you’ve had a run-in with the law, there are some cases where the judge will order you to complete treatment in exchange for a reduced jail sentence. If the treatment program isn’t completed or you’re not complying with the rules and regulations of the treatment facility by the time you return to court, you may find yourself behind bars.

The court-mandated treatment allows addicts to seek help before it destroys their lives and leads them to a jail cell for a very long time.

AA or NA Meetings

For some people, treatment programs aren’t the way to go at all. Instead, they choose to attend alcoholics anonymous or narcotics anonymous meetings. These meetings allow addicts to come together with other addicts that are in recovery and share your story and advice.

These meetings aren’t just to share stories; they also allow addicts to find a sponsor.

A sponsor is someone that will help the person walk through the 12 steps of recovery as they continue to stay sober. Sponsors are also there for the addict when they feel overwhelmed and want to use it again.

Each step is meant to teach the addict something important such as the step where they make their amends for the hurt and pain that they’ve caused to those in their lives. In these meetings, addicts can also earn chips. The chips symbolize the length of time the addict has remained drug-free and alcohol-free.

Choose Your Program

When your entering drug detox programs, you need to choose the one that works for you. It’s about being honest with yourself and understanding that an outpatient program may not be the best choice if you are vulnerable to your surroundings.
