COVID-19, Alcohol & Addiction: A Letter to Policymakers

SOBA New Jersey’s Medical Director Jeffrey A. Berman, M.D., DFASAM is the lead author of a letter to policymakers requesting changes to alcohol policies during the COVID-19 pandemic. This includes the provision of emergency surge funding for detoxification, treatment and recovery support services for people addicted to alcohol and other drugs.

These policies are important to reduce alcohol-related harm, given the reports of increased alcohol consumption during the pandemic, including results of a survey finding that about a third of people are consuming alcohol while working from home.

The World Health Organization has affirmed these concerns about the negative impacts of higher alcohol use, emphasizing that “alcohol compromises the body’s immune system and increases the risk of adverse health outcomes” and can ramp up family violence during stressful lockdowns.
