Drug Rehabilitation Assessment & Evaluation Of Co-occurring Disorders

Substance use disorders can present in complex ways. It is often difficult for mental health professionals to tease out co-occurring mental health conditions, such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), an eating disorder, bipolar disorder, depression, and borderline personality disorder. As a result, there is a great deal of misdiagnosis and over-medicating of individuals with substance use disorders. At SOBA College Recovery, our staff consists exclusively of clinicians that are dually licensed in mental health and substance use disorders, and psychiatrists that are certified by the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM). Upon admission and thereafter all clients will be re-assessed for co-occurring mental health conditions and our psychiatrists will collaborate with clinicians to develop individualized treatment plans.

Outpatient drug rehabs New JerseyAt SOBA College Recovery outpatient drug rehab New Jersey, we have each of our clients meet with our syllabus management team to provide academic support. When the client arrives, they work with a counselor to plan out their class schedules, exam dates, and assignments. From there, the client will continue to meet with a member of our syllabus management team on a regular basis. We carefully review assignments before they are due and again after they are graded for every assignment. At the earliest sign of academic problems, clients will be connected with the appropriate tutoring, writing centers, and other support services. We believe in empowering clients to eventually utilize support services and manage their academic workload independently, but also realize that guidance from our staff is necessary for this critical transition to greater independence.

Substance Abuse Treatment, Mental Health, and Learning Disabilities

SOBA College Recovery drug rehabs New Jersey center is the first treatment center in the country on a college campus to offer substance abuse, mental health, and learning disabilities services. Particular risk factors such as low self-esteem, short attention span, a high degree of frustration, and the desire to “fit in” may lead those with learning disabilities to be more susceptible to substance use and mental health issues. Therefore, we have staff with advanced degrees and college services for students with learning disabilities. With the client’s consent, we utilize their high school special education records including:

  • educational (e.g. Woodcock-Johnson testing)
  • psychological evaluations (e.g. Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale)
  • speech and language assessments
  • Individualized Education Plans (IEPs)
  • Summary of Performances (SOPs)

We also review any previous college records as well as standardized tests. This information is used to then facilitate the necessary steps in order for the client to receive appropriate accommodations, such as extended time on exams in college. Our staff provides clients with guidance and support, tailored to their specific learning style and unique needs. We have groups based on academic success with a combination of support from our syllabus management team. Development of organizational, time management, and study skills are just some examples of group topics. We have found this to be a winning combination with our outpatient treatment program in New Jersey that works for our clients.
